THE STORY OF VILLA NORD

A Legacy Woven in Time

arnt flengstad annouces a la carte for hotel du nord

Arnt Flengstad announces Trondheim's first à la carte in Adresseavisen on April 24, 1838.

The story of Villa Nord begins in 1837, when Arnt and Ingeborg Flengstad opened the doors to Hôtel du Nord. As Trondheim’s first hotel, it offered something rare for the time: a welcoming space where locals and travelers could gather over an à la carte meal and good conversation. Without fanfare, it quietly shifted the social life of the city.

As the decades passed, the city changed. Fires reshaped the streets, and the original wooden structures were eventually replaced by the neo-Gothic townhouses that stand here today. Over the years, this address became a home for dedicated makers and creators. Furniture builders from Trondhjems Speil- og Møbelfabrikk, glass artisans from Gerh. K. Aspaas, and the prominent architect Karl Norum all spent time within these walls, adding their own layers of local craft to the buildings.

Through all these changes, the tradition of welcoming guests endured. Generations of hoteliers—running Hospitset Dronningen, Linnea Hotell, and Hotel Fru Schøller—continued to offer travelers a place to rest.

Now, Villa Nord will carry the history forward. We honor the craftsmen and caretakers who came before us not with nostalgia, but by continuing their commitment to genuine hospitality and tactile design.

When you walk through our doors, you are invited to become part of a continuous story that started with a simple, sincere welcome in 1837.
